Enzymes for animal nutrition are used as feed additives and processing aids, primarily for the following purposes:
· Enhance digestion and absorption of nutrients
· Improve feed utilization
· Reduce feed costs
· Reduce environmental impact
Enzymes are predominantly used for monogastric animals like pigs and poultry. Enzymes generally catalyze chemical reactions in the digestive systems of the animal leading to degradation of the feed ingredients and release of more energy from the feed. While this effect of enzymes can improve the nutritive value of diets, adding enzymes to feed may also minimize the environmental impact of animal production. An example of this is the use of phytase in feed which will lead to the utilization of otherwise inaccessible phosphorus in the diet and that way limit the excretion of phosphorous to the environment.
